Juliet James is a contemporary British artist specialising in expressionistic figurative and semi-abstract painting, Her work is characterised by confidently fluid lines in a monochromatic palette (with bursts of colour) executed with a minimalistic sensibility,
Process and experimentation is the driving force in Juliet's artistic practice: the constant evaluation of ideas and techniques inspires each new series of paintings. Photography, traditional printmaking and digital image manipulation are cross-referenced and re-worked several times over to result in unique and unexpected pictorial elements.
Juliet's work is known for a favoured subject matter of playfully erotic, sensual nudes with interjections of nature - particularly plants, foliage, birds and the sea. Objects merge into negative space or are camouflaged against bold areas of geometric pattern, Subtle humour and subversive twists add a tongue-in-cheek redefinition of the concept of erotica and the male gaze (as portrayed by a female artist).
Juliet is a graduate of Central St Martin's College of Art and Design (UAL), where she gained a BA Honours degree in Fashion and Print Design. In 2018 Juliet had two paintings, the Garden of Venus and Hot Pants (Replication I1), selected by Grayson Perry to hang in the Central Gallery of the Royal Academy of Arts, London, as part of the 250th Summer Exhibition.
Juliet is based in East Sussex and works from her studio at Thames-side Studios in Greenwich, London. She has participated in a number of group exhibitions, and has artwork collected in private collections across Europe and the USA.
